Just Blaze Draws a Road Map for Finding Beats.

Don't be fooled by imitation Just Blaze sounds, the original is the only one that counts. But he'll be the first to admit to the places he finds his inspiration, and where he gets his drum sounds. Blaze listens to a lot of old records for beats. In the following highlights from his panel at the ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO he discusses the pros and cons of sampling, how to leave space for the artist when you are producing a track and the new roles producers play in making records.

Justin as he was called back in the day worked harder than anyone in the scene. In the mid to late 90's he was an assistant at a studio in down town NYC. I was an engineer. He would assist sessions that last all night long. The sun would be coming up and I would be heading out the door and he would be setting up his rig to start working. He was always friendly with a quick smile (even to me the only white guy around). His beats were awesome back then and they have gotten a lot better since. It's really great to see that hard work and determination does pay off.
